Contributions to the Keegel Yates Teamsters Joint Council 32 Education Fund come from Local Unions, Members, and special endowments. The Fund is named to honor the deceased IBT General Secretary-Treasurer and Joint Council 32 President C. Thomas Keegel and deceased Joint Council 32 President Harold J. Yates. Each of these men's dedication to children and education and generosity helped sustain the scholarship program. Teamsters Joint Council 32 believes that the Labor Movement in America lies in the hands of our children, and we believe that education is the key to their future. The scholarship competition for both awards begins October 1 of each year, with an application deadline of April 30. Rules and qualifications for scholarship awards can be found on their application forms.
Keegel Yates Teamsters Joint Council 32 Education Fund Scholarship Awards for Graduating High School Seniors
Through collaborative efforts of the Joint Council 32 Executive Board and the Keegel Yates Teamsters Joint Council 32 Education Fund, eight $2,000 scholarships are offered annually to graduating high school seniors. All students who have maintained a “B” average or better throughout high school and who are the children of active or retired Teamsters are eligible to apply. Winners are drawn by lot.
The Keegel Yates Teamsters Joint Council 32 Education Fund also sponsors two $1,000 annual adult learner scholarships for Teamster Members themselves. The adult learner scholarships honor Martin Duffy, a professor with the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service from 1960 through 1990. Professor Duffy was involved with labor union scholarship programs from the mid-1960s and the Teamsters high school scholarships until his retirement.
